FREC 3 This 35-hour course, attended over five days, also recommends an additional 118 hours of post-course learning through pre-course reading and continual professional development. Leeds First Aid Courses supports learners in planning and executing this self-directed study and holds direct claims status with Qualsafe for issuing certificates.
This training equips individuals to handle emergencies effectively, making it an indispensable qualification for anyone involved in pre-hospital care.
Learning Outcomes
- First Response Emergency Care (Unit 1): Understanding and managing emergency care roles, incident assessment, patient evaluation, airway management, unresponsive patient care, resuscitation equipment use, and emergency oxygen administration.
- Care of Trauma (Unit 2): Management of catastrophic bleeding, shock, general bleeding, burns, scalds, minor injuries, poisoning, head and spinal injuries, and musculoskeletal injuries.
- Care of Medical Conditions (Unit 3): Identifying and managing patients with respiratory issues, anaphylaxis, major illnesses, seizures, and environmental exposure effects.
Assessment
Participants must pass the following to achieve certification:
- 6 practical assessments/skills tests
- 3 theory assessments (multiple choice question papers)
- 1 invigilated exam Certifications are valid for three years, with a revalidation option available over three days.
Post-Course Engagement
While not obligatory, a minimum of 118 hours of self-directed study is recommended. This includes additional reading and practical application. Guidance is provided during the course on how to manage this study, which may include reflective writing and exploration of relevant literature in pre-hospital care.
Progression
Successful completion of FREC Level 3 allows progression to higher levels, subject to meeting entry requirements.
Recognition of Prior Learning
Holders of a Level 3 First Person on Scene (Intermediate) qualification taken within the last three years are eligible for a 3-day FREC requalification. Other qualifications may be considered through direct mapping of learning outcomes to FREC 3.
Instructor Qualifications
All course instructors meet stringent Qualsafe requirements, which include ongoing internal and external quality assessments and maintaining a portfolio of CPD relevant to frontline ambulance services.
